Product Description
It's been more than a decade since Dr. Jonathan Wright introduced the concept of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) with the book Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45 (Wright JVW, Morgenthaler J. Smart Publications, 1997), at a time when only a handful of clear thinking, knowledgeable doctors had ever heard about bio-identical hormones. Many women first learned the truth about HRT and BHRT from that first book; others later heard about it from TV celebrity Suzanne Somers, who described her personal experiences with a different version of BHRT in the first of a series of books. But the real stampede away from HRT and toward BHRT began in 2002 with the premature termination of a large, government-funded study-the Women's Health Initiative (WHI)-the results of which confirmed that the risks of conventional HRT unquestionably outweighed its benefits. In their new updated book, /Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained/, authors Wright and Lenard have brought to light many examples of forgotten or ignored scientific studies combined with up-to-date clinical experience that provide solid support for the safety and benefits of BHRT.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book for Professionals and Serious Readers   June 21, 2010

In 1997, physicians were happily writing millions of prescriptions for Wyeth Pharmaceutical's Premarin®. A prophet crying in the wilderness, Dr. Wright wrote the definitive book on bio-identical hormone replacement, Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45. In 2002 the large research study, The Women's Health Initiative, terminated the study because it found that Prempro® (Wyeth's estrogen made from pregnant mare urine and progesterone created in the lab) increased the incidence of breast cancer increase 26% and instead of reducing heart disease as previously believed, increased the incidence of heart disease. Further, it increased the incidence of dementia. Premarin® and Prempro® prescriptions plummeted. Despite fierce opposition by the pharmaceutical industry, bio-identical hormone replacement has been increasing in popularity. In Dec. 2009 Dr. Wright and Dr. Leonard wrote the currently definitive book on the subject, Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained.

Iconoclast Dr. Jonathan Wright is a remarkable pioneer. He saw the light when others didn't know to look for it. He fought the drug companies and medical establishment at considerable personal cost. Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement, presents the research data on bio-identical hormone replacement and how it fosters good health and reduces the risk to cancer, heart disease, and dementia.

He discusses the importance of a full health assessment, testing several of the types of estrogen and testing progesterone and testosterone levels before supplementing. Testing also needs to be done periodically to measure whether the hormones are at optimal levels. He explains why the best hormone test is a 24-hour urine test, the importance of individually prescribing and compounding hormone supplements (as off the shelf bio-identical supplements only offer a few dose sizes and a few types of estrogen), and why creams are better than pills. His advice is solidly based in both considerable research and years of clinical experience. The book is written for professionals and for patients who are willing to do some homework. The subject is so vital to health and wellness that the homework is well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly Best Available Discussion of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement   May 30, 2010

Stay Young and Sexy with Bio-identical Hormone Replacement expands and updates Jonathan Wright's earlier, briefer book, Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45. Additional, newer published studies are analyzed. Additional information explaining how to reverse osteoporosis, fibrocysts, emphysema and skin wrinkling is included.

The advantages of transdermal hormone delivery are explained, although the authors appear to neglect the superior action of oral micronized bioidentical Prometrium for opening GABA receptors and reducing anxiety. Proponents of postmenopausal monthly cycling of Progesterone may be dissappointed to read Jonathan Wright does not recommend re-establishing monthly periods.

Using low Cobalt doses to decrease hypermetabolism of estrogens is explained.

Results of transdermal application of estriol and progesterone in facial skin care products is compared along with results of an oral collagen and hylauronic acid formula, which apparently produces noticeable results.

An expose of Wyeth-Ayers attempt to unfairly limit trade by attacking compounding pharmacies illiminates the extent to which legitimate nonprofit organizations have been corrupted by funding from pharmaceutical manufacturers.

A fascinating discussion of historical bioidentical hormone replacement reveals Chinese royalty actually distilled human hormones from urine and successfully used them, between 1025 and 1833 AD.

This book also contains some humor regarding some concepts which are probably self evident to most three year olds although they apparently have not been grasped by some physicians rigidly adhering to the prevailing FDA and AMA dogma. Perhaps the question posed on page 18 of this book, will help clarify some issues for physicians clinging to antiquated, unsafe hormone replacement regimens.

5 out of 5 stars The Perimenopause Blog Review of Stay Young & Sexy w/ Bio-identical Hormone Replacement   March 19, 2010

Book Review from The Perimenopause Blog by Magnolia Millier

Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained by Dr. Jonathan V. Wright & Lane Lenard, PhD. with a foreword by Suzanne Somers.

First of all, I want to give kudos to Suzanne Somers. Yeah, I know, we all remember her as the ditzy blonde, Chrissie on Three's Company all those years ago and maybe some of you even remember her Thigh Master days. Cheesy, I know.

But you have to give the girl props for bringing A LOT of attention to bio-identical hormones. I know she's not the first person nor even the pioneer, but she has put a face on bio-identicals and for that, she deserves credit in my opinion.

In Suzanne's foreword, she reminds us once again that knowledge is power. I couldn't agree more. I have beat the drum since I've been blogging about women's issues, on how important it is to have good information and knowledge to make informed decisions.

Dr. Wright's book, Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained women can get more knowledge and information and do just that.

Dr. Wright lays out the case for bio-iodentical hormones with over 40 years of research, in which he cites his sources and medical case studies. As a medical doctor, Dr. Wright's work is based in real medical science and research and not bogus junk-science, as those who are opposed to bio-identicals would have you to believe.

In his preface, Dr. Wright begins with the debate of hormones produced from horse urine versus hormones produced from more biologically compatible sources for humans. Though the bio-identical hormone debate is new to us, the entire subject of bio-identicals is not.

In fact, the ancient Chinese were mimicking and producing bio-identical human hormones as far back as the years 1025 to 1833 AD. A fact that I found particularly interesting and intriguing.

Though the book is full of medical research and plenty of sources cited to back up his claims, I think you will still be able to find this book easy to read as a lay person.

Personally, though I appreciate all of the sources and research being cited, I'm more of an "okay, so what can I do about it" kind of reader.

Dr. Wright synthesizes the information and distills it down to something that is more palatable and easier to take in, for those of you who may be like me.

Dr. Wright discusses the common symptoms of menopause that so many of us complain about, such as mood swings, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and those dreaded night sweats, in excellent detail and also introduces exactly how and why bio-identicals can help. Again, nothing like being able to connect the dots between estrogen and our symptoms.

No discussion on bio-identical hormones would be complete though without pointing out the political wrangling that is currently going on within the medical community with the pharmaceutical companies (who do not want to release their monetary grip on the situation) and the FDA, who often present difficulties and roadblocks for those who would like to see change in how menopause and perimenopause symptoms are treated.

I am sure there are good-willed and well-intentioned physicians who have genuine and real questions about bio-identical hormones and therefore, are not eager to jump on the bandwagon just yet.

I can certainly appreciate their concerns and understand why they would want to continue to debate. In fact, I personally think it's a good idea. However, the pharmaceutical companies have a much different agenda, based in profit concerns rather than a concern for the health and well-being of women.

Dr. Wright devotes an entire chapter to the politics and debate of bio-identical hormones which I found to be excellent and useful so that we, the consumers and patients, can "know the score" so to speak, who the players are in the debate and what they are seeking to gain.

There is a chapter detailing the different forms of bio-identicals (suppositories, creams, etc.), how they are compounded and where you can find compounding pharmacists and pharmacies. There is also a chapter on why men can benefit from hormone therapy as well.

There are many wonderful books on the market today on bio-identical hormones and I know that it can at times be overwhelming and confusing. But, in looking over Dr. Wright's book I can say that it seems to be another good one you can add to your library.

The goal of The Perimenopause Blog is to inform you of those that I run across that I think might be useful.Stay Young & Sexy with Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement: The Science Explained is without a doubt, one of those books.

5 out of 5 stars BHRT to the Rescue!   February 16, 2010
Lynette R. Fleming (Decatur, IL USA)

Have you lost any friends to breast cancer? Worried you might be next? Has your doctor offered to prescribe Premarin or Fosamax for the issues plaguing you before, during or after menopause ... but you're wondering about the risks? Want to look and feel your best as you age? Tired of traditional medicine and pharmaceuticals with their detrimental side effects and risks? BHRT to the rescue!

Women (and men) have been searching for the fountain of youth for eons and, except for the ancient Chinese, in all the wrong places. Have you ever heard that if you take in too many vitamins, you urinate them out? Well, as it turns out, the secret to youth is found in the urine of our young people. People urinate out lots of good stuff, including hormones, vitamins, minerals, and so on. Way back in the 11th century, medieval Chinese scientists and chemists had no way of knowing any of the individual hormones, but guessed that all of the substances that "power" the human body are found in human urine. Today's scientists have found that human urine actually does contain every hormone known to be secreted by the human body, and a wide variety of minerals too. Many of you are probably disgusted right now, but remember ... since the 60's millions of women have been taking Premarin, pills containing hormones concentrated from pregnant mare's urine. Which do you think would copy nature better ... human urine or horse urine?

Dr. Wright suggests that in order for modern BHRT to catch up with "comprehensive medieval Chinese BHRT", we process human urine. And if we do so, we could end the financial woes of many school districts and universities across the United States. A little bit of this "recycling" would not only help millions of middle-age adults, but also our troubled educational system. So it wouldn't be unreasonable to believe that in ten years (or even less) you may be touring a university or high school to view the separate (male and female) high-tech filtration and purification installations which will clean up and extract the myriad of hormones in ultra-pure concentrated form, which will then be divided by compounding pharmacists into individualized daily doses for older men and women. Sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, doesn't it?

Until that happens, today's BHRT is synthesized from starting material in the Mexican yam and/or soy plants. Although incomplete, it is much safer than medicines commonly prescribed as menopausal hormone replacement therapy. This book offers compelling evidence not to take traditional HRT "therapeutic" drugs, like Prempro and Premarin. The Women's Health Initiative found that after four years of treatment with Prempro, the women who took it had a 26% increase in invasive breast cancer. As a bonus, Prempro increased the risk of heart disease ... a 29% increase overall and an 81% increase during the first year of use. Premarin was found to increase the risk of stroke, and Prempro doubled the risk for all types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. I still remember the nurse practitioner who counseled me as I headed into menopause, recommending that I take HRT drugs, if not for the hot flashes, to keep my mind. Boy, am I glad I didn't take her advice. My grandma kept her mind until her death at 99 ½, and never took Prempro or Premarin, and my 80-year-old mom's mind is so sharp, a company just offered her a part-time job.

This book explains the real science behind BHRT so we and our medical practitioners can decide if it is best for us. The reasons for looking into it are many, including managing our hormones, extending our youthful years, cutting our risk of osteoporosis and heart disease and cancer, and even our risk of Alzheimer's disease. When I first heard about it, I thought its purpose was just to get through menopause, but I was wrong. Its benefits are much, much greater than that. This more than 400-page book is filled with compelling reasons not to take HRT medications. Whether you partake in BHRT should be decided by you and your health practitioner. Reading this book will rocket boost your understanding of the controversy, politics, and the benefits of BHRT. As it turns out, if BHRT can survive the attacks of the global pharmaceutical industry and its partner politicians, the fountain of youth in our future may very well be a fountain of urine.
