Amazon.com Review In this age of do-it-yourself health care (heck, if the doctor only sees you for 10 minutes each visit, what other options are there?), Change Your Brain, Change Your Life fits in perfectly. Filled with "brain prescriptions" (among them cognitive exercises and nutritional advice) that are geared toward readers who've experienced anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, excessive anger or worry, and obsessive behavior, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life milks the mind-body connection for all it's worth. Written by a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who has also authored a book on attention deficit disorder, Change Your Brain contains dozens of brain scans of patients with various neurological problems, from caffeine, nicotine, and heroin addiction to manic-depression to epilepsy. These scans, often showing large gaps in neurological activity or areas of extreme overactivity, are downright frightening to look at, and Dr. Amen should know better than to resort to such scare tactics. But he should also be commended for advocating natural remedies, including deep breathing, guided imagery, meditation, self-hypnosis, and biofeedback for treating disorders that are so frequently dealt with by prescription only.
Product Description BRAIN PRESCRIPTIONS THAT REALLY WORK In this breakthrough bestseller, you'll see scientific evidence that your anxiety, depression, anger, obsessiveness, or impulsiveness could be related to how specific structures in your brain work. You're not stuck with the brain you're born with. Here are just a few of neuropsychiatrist Dr. Daniel Amen's surprising--and effective--"brain prescriptions" that can help heal your brain and change your life: To Quell Anxiety and Panic: ¸ Use simple breathing techniques to immediately calm inner turmoil To Fight Depression: ¸ Learn how to kill ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) To Curb Anger: ¸ Follow the Amen anti-anger diet and learn the nutrients that calm rage To Conquer Impulsiveness and Learn to Focus: ¸ Develop total focus with the "One-Page Miracle" To Stop Obsessive Worrying: ¸ Follow the "get unstuck" writing exercise and learn other problem-solving exercises

Change your Brain, Change your Life July 21, 2010 Margaret S. Hackett (Punta Gorda, Florida) The book is more case history and I have not seen much that could tell you more than common sense over all. Yes, the brain and head are major parts of ones body and medical technology is changing every day. More is learned and improvements in caring for and treating the human wonder as each day passes. Some people are just born with problems, some happen due to injuries and how a person deals with the events of their lives makes a world of difference. I have not yet read the entire book as you can only truly digest so much of it at a time. The self help questions along the way may be of help to some but so far I have not seen great value to the average person. Doctors who specialize in the brain parts may be more interested in doing more studies on a greater variety of the population for comparrison. Who knows. Maybe everyone should have SPECT test and the insurance companies would really croak then. How else can anyone prove what is going on in the brain?
Great Book, Great Service July 20, 2010 Anne Bowie (Gardnerville, NV USA) This book is a must have in your library. You can't just read it and take it back to the library. I refer to it several times a month....and I'm healthy.
great book July 7, 2010 amcon3 This has so many cool, useful facts in it, that make sense. The title is misleading in that it will change your life, rather it should be titled "This is how the brain works, and there are tools one can use to stimulate parts that need a bit of circulation, and to decrease circulation in other parts." Really just knowing and being aware that this is how the brain works under certain conditions is so very helpful. It has good explanations, and pictures, and easy to read. One of the neat things is that when this was written the health profession was not looking towards this way of treatment, and now so many years later there are many of these tools that are commonly used today.
a biochemical reason behind mental disorders July 4, 2010 photondn (Florida, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. Daniel Amen's Change Your Brain Change Your Life provides an idea that much of the psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and the like, can be attributed to neurological brain disorders, not just regular psychological reasons.
This was an interesting book. Amen's main idea is that certain psychological disorders could have a neurological component in the brain. There might be psychological reason behind the disorder, but brain function maybe impaired to an extent that the suffer may have a difficult time overcoming the disorder.
Amen uses a SPECT machine to measure blood flow in the brain. Based on the SPECT scans, he shows that certain disorders is associated with common patterns of bloodflow irregularies in the brain. Based on his experience with the SPECT scans, he theorizes that a psychological disorder could have a physiological component.
He also shows how drugs and alcohol affects, or impairs, the brain. He also describes in good detail the roles of certain parts of the brain such as the limbic system, prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia, cingulate gyrus, and the temporal lobes.
I would recommend this book to anybody whose loved one suffers from anxiety, depression, ADD, ADHD, drug abuse, and so forth. This book may offer a clue as to why some people suffer they way they do. This book is a good introduction to the roles of certain parts of the brain such as the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and so forth. I have read a number of financial books and have come across at least one reference to the brain. If you know nothing about the brain, this book might be a good intro to it.
Thumbs up for Change your Brain, Change your Life June 9, 2010 D. Zuckerman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well written, thought provoking, concise, yet not at all DRY.
More than I expected. A must- have in my library.
Thanks Amazon.
