| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr
Product Description
Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

ADHD July 28, 2010 Lauren I am behind in my reading, have not read this book yet, I recieved it in great shape! great price!
Out of date, limited, and lots of "description" with no strategies July 23, 2010 Careful Reader (New York) I cannot understand why this book remains popular. I think it must be the name, and the fact that it's been around so long. People see it as some kind of initiation right, or something. Most of it, though, is due to Hallowell being an expert self-promoter. Really, if you want to not only understand ADHD but act on solid strategies, there are so many better options. Especially if you aren't the "hyperactive" type of ADHD or you are a woman.
Contrary to popular myth, Hallowell did not "invent" ADHD; he's not even a researcher, and he doesn't seem to have a snowball's clue about medication. (He doesn't take it himself, and at a lecture I attended, he recommends COFFEE, which is absolutely the worst thing for many ADDers because it makes them even more irritable and creates more problems with sleep. He also promotes the Dore Method, but there is no EVIDENCE this helps ADHD.) He merely popularized what others had worked hard to research and explain for many years before him.
If you're a woman with ADHD, read anything by Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D. and Patricia Quinn, MD Understanding Women With AD/HD.
A good intro guide to Adult ADHD is by Dr. Thomas Brown Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults (Yale University Press Health & Wellness)
Great tips to be found in this new book from Dr. Ari TuckmanMore Attention, Less Deficit: Success Strategies for Adults with ADHD
Troubles getting organized -- best book ever ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life
Get educated. Stay positive. ADHD is not all good and it's not all bad. And there are good strategies these days for addressing the "bad." Good luck!
A MUST READ!!! June 27, 2010 Nadine This is the absolute best book you can get on ADD! Edward Hallowell M.D. has ADD himself, and speaks from first-hand knowledge about the condition. He addresses how to identify the disorder and sheds light on every aspect of it! This book will help you understand your loved one with ADD, and also help them understand themselves! Good advice for the non-technically trained March 13, 2010 William Eveleth (Pensacola, Fl) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had a few clients in my business coaching practice with ADD; people who couldn't stay focused from their desks to their file cabinets. This book really helped me with some good practical advice on how to more effectively deal with people with ADD. It also has a good section on the questions to ask to know whether someone should be professionally tested for ADD.
