Great resource tool for Crohn's diet needs. Our family uses the menu ideas on a daily basis. Great value pricing as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best book available   April 2, 2010

My wife has talked to many doctors, read many blogs and books, and checked out countless websites but this is the first book that actually took a wholistic approach to managing ulcerative colitis and just made sense. The problem was that prior to reading this book, she just listened to doctors and they resort to pretty harsh drugs every time but we learned that there is a lot more that you can do in order to avoid the nasty drugs.

This book is worth reading if you are new to healthy eating in general and have been recently diagnosed with IBD. I say recently because most of us know what triggers our symptoms. I read this and felt like, OK got it, eat healthy according to the food pyramid and watch out for your triggers. If you're new to IBD you could save yourself some time and learn about what does trigger symptoms in most people with IBD.

I bought this book along with Self Healing Colitis & Crohn's 3rd Edition and Breaking the Vicious Cycle. I was already motivated to figure out what I could do to at least lessen my symptoms and hopefully lessen the amount of drugs needed. In this book you'll find that peeling all your fruits is recommended and cooking all your vegetables until they are mush is recommended. The author recognizes that by doing this nutrients are lost and that supplementation will be needed. After reading things like having to peel grapes before eating them, I moved onto Breaking the Vicious Cycle. I'm now on the SCD Diet and it seems to be helping me. I figured if I'm going to modify my diet to the recommendations in New Eating Right then I'm going to go all out and do the SCD Diet.

Overall, it's worth a read but get it from the library instead if possible. You may not need to keep it around.

5 out of 5 stars Grateful for this book   March 12, 2010
Irish Lady (San Antonio, TX USA)
I bought this book in 2002 and I'm so glad I did. I had a lot of problems, very painful, even hospitalized three times for diverticulitis - which now, I believe was mostly colitis and/or IBD AND diverticulitis.

Eating habits are hard to break, and it has taken me several years to learn what I can and cannot eat. The problem is, when you're feeling great, it's easy to forget that another piece of chocolate or that wonderful spicy chili is going to cause terrible pain later. You've heard someone say, "I used to be able to eat anything I wanted," and that may have been part of the problem - all the bad habits learned while growing up.

I keep this book next to my place at the table. It has helped me learn a lot about my body.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life   November 25, 2009

I was diagnosed with severe UC just over a year ago. I had rapid-cycling flares-- sick for two or three days, recovering for a few, well for two, then sick again-- on a weekly basis. It was virtually impossible to function. I'm 45, male and have always lead a very active life. I was dependent on Prednisone for six months. Every time the dose went down, I got sicker. I was also on 6mp, Apriso, and colocort enemas, all to no avail. I had read Elaine Gottschall's "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" and tried the diet, but with limited success. In June, just before Father's Day, I went in for my second colonoscopy in a year and was facing the possibility of starting Remicade. I was extremely depressed and at times, wished it would all just end.
After doing a lot of research online, I found Dr. Scala's book and it appealed to my scientific mind because he had reviewed scientific literature as well as conducted his own interviews with IBD patients. I received the book two days after my colonoscopy and read it in one sitting. I immediately implemented it. Since then, it has been like a miracle, at least for me. Within a few days, I was starting to become active again. Within a few weeks, I was back to my old self. Within a month I was off Prednisone and 6mp. Over five months later, I feel great. I'm living a normal life again-- working, going to the gym, active sex life, going out to dinner, etc. I only take Lialda daily as well as my vitamins.
I don't know if it will help everyone as I think we all have some highly individualized causes of our symptoms that medicine just can't explain yet. But this book, this man, literally saved my life and I am so thankful to him and to God.
