2 out of 5 stars Somewhat entertaining, but not helpful to me   July 2, 2010
L. Riley (NJ - United States)
I originally bought this book hoping for some sage advice on how to manage in life as "the second wife / step-mom" but was quickly disappointed. In all honesty; the book frightened me to the point of almost breaking it off with my newly divorced boyfriend. I remember thinking "This is what the future holds for me if I stay with my boyfriend?" The advice didn't seem to fit many of my situations while, at the same time, some of the stories hit too close to home. I also didn't like that the author seems comfortable in the idea that the second wife will always be "second". I have too much self respect for that manner of thinking. While we cannot change his (or our own) past, we do have the ability to create our futures and mine can include both my boyfriend and his children without sacrificing my own self respect.

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging Eye Opener   June 13, 2010
L. Gilder (Beaumont, Tx)
What a great book. I am about to marry the most wonderful guy who has joint custody of a 4 year old who I adore. However the ex-wife has made it her personal goal to make our lives miserable by using the child. There were so many times when I found myself saying, "Oh my gosh- that is ME" while reading the book. The author wastes no words in setting situations straight and it helped me so much to understand the whole stepmother experience. I feel much more confident about being a stepmother now and I understand the psycho ex-wife in a way that will help me cope with her antics.

4 out of 5 stars Reality Check   May 10, 2010
Kerrianne (Florida)
I ordered this book still maintaining some optimism about my choice to date a divorced man and his THREE children. In all honesty the book was very well written and had some great pointers - but it was a little depressing. To sum it up - it pretty much made me feel like I will never compare or hold a candle to the childrens' real mother and will always feel like an outcast with "bio-moms" as the author likes to call them. I am still new at this and hoping that my optimism doesn't fade much faster, but if you are looking for a reality check from the rose colored glasses - this book is perfect for that! I think every relationship is different and there are so many different aspects to the new extended family. But all in all it's a quick and interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and Practical   December 9, 2009

I received this book as an engagement gift, and I re-read it every year or so. The author is honest and good humored. What I liked about it was that it gave me some solace that every step-mom goes through common experiences, and it gave some great insight on boundaries, and some of the dynamics that come with a blended family.

I highly recommend this book!

This is such a great book. I am about to become a stepmother and this book had me laughing and smiling and made it seem like I could make it. I have read it twice already and figure I will be reading it many more times to come!
