Amazon.com Review Harmonizing sexual energy is paramount for paramours. Taoists see men's sexual energy as fire, quick to ignite and extinguish (hence the post-coital grunt-and-roll phenomenon), while women's energy is water, slower to boil but longer lasting. Further, in this view a woman's sexual energy starts in her head and "trickles down" over her heart to her genitals, while a man's energy ignites in the genitals and flares up past his heart to his mind. The early Taoists were physicians as well as sexologists, and their centuries-old teachings encourage sex not only for pleasure and intimacy, but for lifelong health, creativity, and longevity. Orgasm is something to cultivate and pursue weekly if not daily, although men learn to separate ejaculation from orgasm and often forgo the former. Coauthored by four longtime practitioners of Taoist sexuality, this book does what The Joy of Sex did for millions of readers: it shines a clear light into foggy areas of sex that have been shrouded, overly mystified, or misunderstood. The 50-odd drawings here, in fact, were created by the same illustrator. Thai author Mantak Chia has done an admirable job with his coauthors of making the mystifying concepts of sexual energy so vivid. Taoist sexuality is, above all, rooted in nature and in the physical. The authors first teach basic exercises like belly breathing and PC-muscle toning (Kegels aren't just for women anymore), as well as pulling energy down from the head to the genitals, circulating sexual energy in the mind, and sharing life-giving energy with a partner. Taoist sex is all about energy flow. "Your genitals and spine are like a water wheel that draws the energy up your spine and then pours it into your head to replenish your brain. From there it flows down like a waterfall into your abdomen, where it can be stored in a life-giving reservoir of energy." The 28 exercises here all teach a deeper energetic sensitivity within oneself before cultivating the flow of sexual energy with a partner. This is an excellent distillation of Taoist sexuality, an antidote for Westerners living "in their heads," and an inspiration for those wanting to "sex the spirit" while they make love. --Rebecca Taylor

Was Expecting Better June 26, 2010 citystreets245 I cannot say this book was a bad read however for the more experience couple it falls a little short for me. Much of the information was a bit contrived and more suited for those with less experience. The entire section about male multiple orgasms was just just a round about way of saying hold back when you get close then continue and repeat until you want to ejaculate, quite a waste if you ask me. Several pages of basically saying the same thing. All that being said for a young couple with little experience this book could prove informative.
I wish I'd had this book when I was 16. March 23, 2010 David Dockhorn (Denver, CO.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm interested in Taoism now and am currently studying Chi Gong. That led me to this book.
Wow! What a great source of information.
The exercises are quite powerful too. Doing the microcosmic orbit exercise I can really feel the energy flowing into my head and through my body. It's more intense than I ever could have imagined.
Talk about having an incentive to meditate!
Good work.

This book provided my partner and I with the techniques, practices, and motivation to fulfill the title's promise. It is a Taoist sexual manual; sort of like a Beginners Guide or A Taoist Sexual Practice Primer.
That being said, the Taoist methods that this book describes don't require "belief" in a religion or spirituality - they discuss physical, verifiable practices that Taoists have known and written about for centuries. To me, the fact that the methods are time tested lend credence and validity to the art and methods.
As far as Taoist spirituality goes, I appreciated the fact that I didn't have to wade through ancient culture, Taoist theories and Taoist "scriptures" to find the instruction I wanted. It got down to business, so to speak.
I love the information summaries, the info-boxes with the numbered steps or stages to practice, the reviews of essential concepts throughout the chapters and the tasteful pencil drawn pictures. Guides describing sexual practice have a line to walk between cheesy and trashy or too moralistic for practical application.
This book is amazing and I am extremely grateful to have found it and very very happy to be able to apply it.
I think it's remarkable. January 4, 2009 Emuru (Western NY state) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
How gently and superbly and amazingly this book explained the experiences of a random couple ("What are the odds?" as my partner would put it...) who have somehow found a connection to the Way- and how marvelous that it could help bring that journey to true realization for both of them. I have been reading this text after the fact, and unable to explain any of it- or my partner, my boo, to explain- either. Having heard the term "Sacred Sex" since the 1960s and simply believing it was a line for some men to have their way with some women- how astonishing, after all these years, to find that it actually means to make love with your souls as well as making love with your bodies.
What a tragedy that we in a western culture have been turned from these great benefits by several older organizations that, centuries ago, wanted to seize all available influence for themselves and share none with the poor, poor people they promised to safeguard. Now that protection against the invading hoards of infidels is temporarily stemmed, what a miracle that these blessed secrets are being made available to a spiritually lonely and starved public, once more.
I understand and sympathize that this book might be repudiated by true Taoists. But serious scholars and priests, please consider the humble opinion of a neophyte, who has had some little experience with this tradition and a whole lot in life, from a turbulent childhood on- this text could help Enlighten people. And wasn't that one of the purposes of Lao Tzu in taking the time to write his own book, just before his retirement from society? Thank you for your consideration and your forebearance, and may God bless Mantak Chia and his wonderful wife. :)
Valuable guidance, difficult to follow fully. November 10, 2007 New Age Newby (Pennsylvania) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this a wonderful book, although I have been able only to scratch the surface of what it claims to be able to teach a man. The emphasis on non-ejaculation is very valuable, even though I have never come close to the whole-body, non-ejaculatory orgasms said to be possible. I was, however, lucky enough to find a woman who could enter an orgasmic state with my staying erect and right with her for the better part of an hour.
